Road bike stem

The bike stem is one of the essential components of the bike that connects the handlebars to the head tube. The stem is therefore an important element for the driving, the handling and the safety of the bicycle.

Among the important criteria for choosing the bicycle stem, there is the length and angle :

· You can find stems with a length of 60mm to 140mm and a variable angle measured in degrees. The length and angle of the stem will determine the position of the cyclist on the bike.

· A longer stem will result in a more leaning and aerodynamic position for the cyclist, which aims for performance and speed, while a shorter length will improve the manoeuvrability.
Similarly, an angle close to the horizontal will give the cyclist a more sporting position while a higher angle will improve their comfort with a higher position.

Another part of your choice for your road bike stem is the material: aluminium or carbon.

The aluminium is more sturdy and more flexible, so it provides more comfort.

Carbon is lighter, more expensive and will be preferred for cyclists looking for performance.

Last choice, the type of stem. There are two types of road bike stems: the adjustable stem, resembling a bent tube, one end of which "plunges" into the fork pivot and which has the advantage of being able to easily adjust the height of the handlebars, and it's slidable in the pivot. This type of stem tends to disappear (still present on vintage bicycles and classic fixies) and is replaced by the "aheadset" stem, which tightens around the pivot of the fork.
