Road bike tubular tyres: lightness and comfort
The choice between a tubular tyre and a classic inner tube tyre isn't easy. Some love an inner tube, while others only swear by tubulars. To simplify the task of looking through each of them, we summarise the advantages and disadvantages of both for a road bike.The advantages of the tubular are numerous:
- Safety: the tubular is glued, so it doesn't risk to leave the rim,
- excellent handling,
- high comfort,
- higher efficiency,
- lighter,
- less fragile.
The disadvantages of the tubular:
- more expensive,
- repair and mounting are more difficult as it must be placed on the wheel with a special glue for tubular tyres.
Nevertheless, the choice is questionable and depends on your own priorities. Today, almost 90% of the Elite peloton is equipped with tubulars but preder riding on tubes during their trianing rides.
