Cannondale: Cutting-Edge Bikes

Cannondale is an integral part of cycling history, with numerous innovations over the years.

Founded in 1971, the brand Cannondale released its first bike in 1983. Its success was immediate, thanks in part to its aluminum frame. Following this, Cannondale introduced its first mountain bike, the SM-300, and gradually expanded its catalog with road bikes, touring bikes, and more. Based in the United States, the brand supported the European boom of mountain biking by establishing itself on the Old Continent in the early 90s. The 90s coincided with the arrival of several innovations unique to Cannondale, such as the CAAD (Alu) frames and the HeadShok fork, a small revolution in the mountain biking world. The brand continued to innovate and still equips its mountain bikes with the Lefty fork, an evolution of the HeadShok.

Cannondale was also very present in competitions with the Volvo-Cannondale mountain bike team and the Saeco road team led by Mario Cipollini. Everyone remembers that bright red Cannondale CAAD 4 on which Super Mario sprinted!

Today, Cannondale supports many athletes around the world, including the World Tour team EF Education First, which includes the Colombian prodigy Sergio Higuita and the 2019 Tour of Flanders winner Alberto Bettiol.

The Legendary Cannondale Topstone 1, 2, and 4 Models

Gravel bikes, which are very versatile, are designed to go far, explore less-traveled roads, or speed up your daily commutes. These gravel bikes offer many advantages for your rides: multiple water bottle positions, a frame spacious enough to accommodate large 42 mm tires, and a full carbon fork for precise handling.

Cannondale Range: MTB, Road, City, and Electric

Today, Cannondale covers all the needs of cyclists, with an MTB range (Touring, XC, Enduro, and All-Mountain), a Road range (Synapse, CAAD, and the new SystemSix), a Gravel range (with the Topstone), a City range, and a complete range of e-bikes called Neo. The Neo range covers all practices, from Road to MTB to City.

The Cannondale SuperX Range

The Cannondale SuperX embodies the culmination of years of development in gravel racing by the American brand. These models combine an ultra-light construction with refined integration. With a frame weighing less than 900 g, this range reduces fatigue while increasing speed and comfort. Strategic flex zones help minimize vibrations on rough terrain, making these bikes as enjoyable to ride as they are efficient.

Positioning Among Cannondale Gravel Bikes

In the world of Cannondale gravel bikes, the SuperX is positioned as a range purely focused on racing performance. Unlike the Topstone, designed for versatility and long adventures, the SuperX is aimed at cyclists looking for a high-end competition machine. Its OutFront geometry offers a perfect balance between agility and stability, ideal for quick direction changes or technical descents.

LAB71 SuperX: The High-End Edition

The LAB71 SuperX model represents the ultimate expression of this range. Using high-tenacity carbon, it combines rigidity and lightness, reducing its weight by more than 100 g compared to other versions. Equipped with elements such as the SRAM RED XPLR drivetrain and Reserve GR carbon wheels, it is designed for demanding riders who compete at the highest level.

SuperX 2: Balance and Efficiency

The SuperX 2 offers a combination of high-end equipment at a more accessible price. Equipped with Shimano GRX Di2 components and Reserve carbon wheels, this model ensures smooth and precise shifting. Vittoria Terreno tires complete the package, providing grip suitable for all terrains.

SuperX 3: The Versatile Choice

Designed for more varied use, the SuperX 3 combines robustness and accessibility. With its Shimano GRX 820 groupset and DT Swiss G1800 wheels, it offers a reliable solution for gravel enthusiasts looking for a compromise between a high-performance bike and a comfortable gravel bike. Its compatibility with tires up to 48 mm allows it to adapt to a wide variety of courses.

SuperX - FAQ

Why return to the name SuperX?

Cannondale chose to reintroduce the name SuperX due to its notoriety and significant history. The previous name, SuperSix EVO SE/CX, while technically accurate, lacked clarity and caused confusion. Returning to SuperX allows for simpler and more intuitive identification of the range.

What are the specifications of the bottom bracket and headset?

The bottom bracket uses a 68 mm threaded standard (BSA), while the headset is integrated, with a diameter of 1.125" at the top and 1.5" at the bottom.

What is the maximum tire clearance?

The frame is compatible with tires up to 48 mm wide, and the fork can accommodate tires up to 51 mm. A minimum clearance of 4 mm must be maintained between the tire and adjacent components.

Is the Ai system for the rear wheels still used?

No, the asymmetrical Ai design has been abandoned. Current industry standards allow for the same performance without resorting to this technology.

What chainring sizes are compatible with the SuperX?

- For a single chainring (1x) configuration: up to 46 teeth.
- For a double chainring (2x) configuration: up to 50/34 or 48/31 teeth.

What are the accepted dimensions for brake discs?

- Rear: between 140 mm and 160 mm.
- Front: between 160 mm and 180 mm.

Is the SuperX approved for UCI competitions?

Yes, the model complies with UCI regulations and has already been used in the 2024 UCI Gravel World Championships.

How does the LAB71 model differ from other versions?

The LAB71 stands out with a high-performance carbon frame optimized for rigidity and lightness. It is approximately 100 g lighter than other models in the range, thanks to the use of high-tenacity fibers and more efficient construction.

What is the total weight supported by the SuperX?

The recommended maximum weight, including the cyclist, bike, and accessories, is 150 kg.

Can a suspension fork be installed on the SuperX?

No, the frame and Delta headset system design are not compatible with a suspension fork.

Is it possible to switch between a single and double chainring transmission?

Yes, the frame is designed to accommodate both configurations. It is possible to remove the front derailleur mount for a cleaner installation in a single chainring setup.

How many water bottle holders can be mounted?

The frame can accommodate two water bottle holders, even on the smallest sizes.

Can accessories like fenders or a rear rack be installed on the SuperX?

No, this model is specifically designed for gravel racing. For increased versatility, such as bikepacking, the Topstone range is more suitable.
