The different types of city bikes
City bikes, also called hybrid bikes, are designed to travel in urban areas: they provide an environmentally friendly and pleasant means of transport. There are several types of city bikes: the Dutch model (a particular type of bicycle born in the Netherlands, robust, comfortable and practical), the Fixie (fixed gear bicycle using pedals to lock the wheel and brake), the folding bicycle and the e-bike. Many models are proposed by the manufacturers, for men and women alike.
The configuration of the city bike makes it possible to drive in a straight position to better see the traffic and to be comfortable, unlike the road bike or MTB where one needs to lean for a more sporty practice.
Initially equipped with a single speed, the city bike now has one or more speeds, whether it's a cheap city bike or a more expensive one.
How to choose a man's or woman's city bike
- If you like to ride quietly, choose a classic urban bike or Dutch bike; if you like to ride fast you have the option of urban sports bikes with a stiffer frame for more nervousness and lightness and a rather forward driving. A cheap city bike is well-suited for beginners or for small trips.
- You can choose between several frame types: the classic frame with a horizontal tube on the front triangle and the open frame without the horizontal tube to easily get on the saddle. The upper tube can be replaced by an inclined tube, it's then called mixed or trapezoidal frame. A woman's city bike will be equipped with an inclined tube.
- Think about the configuration of the city in which you will be driving: if the terrain is flat, you won't need many gears on your bike anyway.
How to equip city bikes
There are plenty of accessories to bring comfort and safety to your city bike: mudguard, bell, crutch, luggage rack, front basket, child seat, lighting (front/rear and reflective strips), hazard retractor and bicycle lock.
