Road Bike and Road Racing
Road Biking or Road Bicycle Racing is a well known discipline, very popular and very old. It was in the late 1890s that the first international road bike races were held on French soil.
Since 1896, Road cycling has been contested at each Summer Olympic Games. The inaugural Road Bike Race took place in Athens: it was a marathon course with cyclists doing 2 laps of the course.
We all have in mind the image of cyclists with their steel frame road bikes, their spare tubular tyre wrapped around the chest, their cycling cap, vintage wool cycling jersey and long socks. Today, the sport has been modernized and professionalized which means that the products have been developedto be more efficient.
Road Bike: Technology at the service of performanc
The current road bikes weigh on average between 6 and 8 kg, they have 700mm wheels fitted with tyres and a inner tube or with tubular tyres. The shape of the handlebar allows the rider to adopt an aerodynamic position. For even more performance, component manufactures are working hard with research and development team to offer products both light and strong. Therefore, carbon and aluminum have an important place in the world of road cycling.
The three main drivetrain manufacturers (Shimano, Sram and Campagnolo) offer different ranges and price point to meet the requirements of each rider: reliability, fluidity, weight gain, strenght, double or triple crankset, electronic or mechanic derailleurs, 9, 10 or 11 speed...
Road Bike Components
- Wheels: 700c wheels, made with alloy or carbon, with different profiles for aerodynamics and stiffness. Mavic, Fulcrum, Shimano, DT Swiss and Zipp are the most known brands.
- Frame: steel, alloy or carbon for maximum lightness and rigidity.
- Components or finishing kit: Saddle, seatpost, stem, handlebar. Many diameters, length and materials are available to meet rider requirements and for a perfect position on the bike. Ritchey, Thomson, Pro, Deda, 3T, Easton are the most trusted brands.
- Drivetrain: chain, cassette, crankset or chainset, front derailleur and rear mech. On the market, three brands are available (Sram, Shimano and Campagnolo).
Road Bike Apparel
Road cycling requires less gear and protections than Mountain Biking. However, for safe riding, the helmet is mandatory. Road Bike Helmets are light and with many vents and are less bulky than MTB Helmet, especially Enduro and DH Helmets.
Cyclists generally wear a padded bib short, a jersey, socks and Road Clipless Shoes. For chilly rides, cyclists usually wear overshoes or shoe covers, arm and leg warmers, a long tight and a windproof or waterproof jacket.
