On the trails, your head is the first thing to protect. But you don't ride the same way on a flowing forest track as on a rocky mountain slope. That's where choosing the right gear really matters. Taking the time to tell a Cross-Country MTB helmet from an All Mountain version will save you from overheating on the climbs or being under-protected when the trail points downhill.
In Cross-Country, you ride on your heart rate. Nose to the handlebars, the effort is constant and the sweat pours. The Cross-Country MTB helmet therefore has to meet a fairly strict brief: be as light as possible and let as much air as possible circulate. Designers have stripped the lines back to the minimum. The shell is often concentrated on the top of the skull to deliver a real aerodynamic gain. In this segment, the aim is almost to forget you're wearing protection, while keeping flawless certification for high-speed impacts.
All Mountain is about versatility, but with a clear lean towards descending. When the terrain gets unpredictable, with slippery roots and menacing rocks, you need something solid. That's why an All Mountain MTB helmet wraps much further around the skull. The shell extends generously down over the occipital area at the back and covers the temples well. Of course, you add a bit of weight compared with XC, but manufacturers now compensate with oversized ventilation channels. You'll also find wide, adjustable visors, which are very handy for parking your goggles on the pedalled sections between descents.
Today the range is huge and the level of technology used to protect our brains has never been higher. If you're after sleek lines to chase a fast time, brands like Met and Abus master the art on XC models. For more aggressive riding, there's plenty of inventiveness. Urge, Poc and Endura regularly break the mould with highly distinctive, ultra-protective All Mountain designs. Finally, you can't ignore the historic heavyweights of action sports: Fox, Bell, Leatt and Smith continue to set trends with aggressive-looking helmets packed with cutting-edge technology to dissipate impacts. It's up to you to decide which way your favourite style of riding leans.
