While a helmet and a pair of gloves are essential for all cycling sports, some mountain biking disciplines such as enduro, all-mountain or DH require additional equipment to reduce the risk of injury and, on the other hand, feel safer.
In your practice you will not need the same level of protection. Follow our advice for choosing your MTB protectors!
All-mountain or trail riding is usually done in medium or high mountain terrain. Given the uneven and sometimes rough terrain, it is possible to opt for soft protection for knees and elbows. Depending on the type of terrain (loose ground, dry and rocky ground...), there are different thicknesses and types of foam. So if you mainly ride on rough terrain, we recommend that you choose the D3O or VPD type of memory foam. Soft protectors ensure that you are not penalised when pedalling. Long gloves are also useful to protect your hands in the event of a fall.
Mixing technical descents and uphill sections, you will need protectors that combine lightness and breathability. At helmet level, manufacturers now offer helmet models with removable chin straps (Met, Giro, Leatt ...) or full-face helmets with more ventilation and low weight (Fox, Urge ...). Choosing soft knee and elbow protectors is the best compromise. If you opt for hard protectors, you can always take them with you when climbing (and leave them in your bag). If you prefer, you can also opt for protective trousers to wear under your shorts. The protective areas on the hips, thighs and coccyx are very useful in the event of a fall. Depending on the commitment, a rucksack (integrated or not) is also necessary and mandatory for most races. We recommend that you opt for a sleeveless waistcoat model, which may also have protection on the ribs.
