After the helmet, this is the most widely worn piece of protection on the trails. MTB knee pads have undergone a major revolution with the arrival of smart materials such as D3O and SAS-TEC. Gone are the days of bulky, rigid plastic shells that restricted movement and irritated the back of the knee. Today, soft pads only harden upon impact. This means you can pedal for hours on all-mountain or enduro terrain without feeling the slightest discomfort, while still benefiting from excellent kinetic energy absorption in the event of a slide on rocks or roots.
Less systematically adopted than their leg counterparts, MTB elbow pads are nevertheless a vital line of defence, particularly in enduro and downhill riding. When the front wheel loses grip or you pass a little too close to a tree, your elbows are always on the front line. Modern models rely on breathable fabric sleeves, often featuring silicone strips to prevent them from sliding down the forearm with vibrations. The aim is to guarantee complete freedom of movement to avoid muscle stiffness, while protecting the joint from abrasions and direct impacts.
As soon as you head onto rough trails, jumps or into a bike park, protecting your back becomes an absolute priority. The range is divided into several categories depending on the intensity of your riding. Full MTB protective jackets cover the spine, shoulders, chest and sometimes the elbows, providing genuine armour for downhill riding. For enduro, riders favour protective jerseys or minimalist MTB back protectors. Often integrated into a highly ventilated sleeveless vest, these CE-certified flexible plates protect the vertebrae without turning the rider into a pressure cooker during sunny transfer and pedalling sections.
Completely invisible once worn underneath your riding gear, MTB protective shorts nevertheless save many sessions from ending early. When the rear wheel loses traction or you slide on a traverse, it is usually the hips and upper thighs that hit the ground first. These protective undershorts feature strategically positioned inserts made from high-density foam or reactive materials around the hips, thighs and sometimes the coccyx. Most also double as technical underwear by incorporating a chamois pad, combining saddle comfort with protection against side impacts.
