Is it time to change your MTB transmission? You'll therefore probably change the chain, the cogset and the chain rings. Remember to take a look at the state of your MTB derailleurs!
The 2 MTB derailleurs are the most important parts of the MTB transmission, because they are the ones that allow you to change gears easily.
Generally there are two derailleurs on the MTB: the rear derailleur and the front derailleur. The rear derailleur will allow to change gears through the cogset. The front derailleur, allows to change gears on the chain rings, also called MTB crowns.
The derailleurs operate with the transmission controls on the driver's handlebars. These allow the cables to be operated to put the derailleur into motion.
The derailleur is a rather complex part, especially in the back. It's composed of several elements to ensure a mechanical and efficient operation.
There is thus a spring which allows the derailleur to move the chain from the smallest to the largest sprocket, the casing (which is more or less short according to the cogset and the number of sprockets), the body, the tensioners and the tightening screws (very important to prevent your transmission from "hanging" all the time).
The derailleur is designed to withstand almost anything
In mountain biking, it's a part that is exposed and that can often be confronted with shocks, more than by road bike.
They are therefore resistant, without neglecting the weight since some models are very light with carbon bodies and casings, like the Sram X0!
In order to avoid regularly breaking the derailleur, the derailleur hanger serves as a fuse and this piece will therefore twist and/or break in order to spare the derailleur (and the frame at the same time).
