Bike inner tubes

The bicycle inner tubes are made out of rubber tubes filled with air that fit between the tyre and the rim. They are equipped with a valve that will allow to inflate them. The valve is either thin (presta) or large (schredder).

The bicycle inner tubes are made of thicker rubber (a thicker rubber will be stronger but heavier) or latex, elastic and lightweight.

There are different sizes of inner tubes that can be measured due to their diameter and width.

There are tubeless tyres, they are called tubeless and tubulars.

How to choose bike inner tubes?

  • Adjust the size of the inner tube to that of the tyre (which is written on it).
  • Choose the tube's material according to your use: one will prefer a thick rubber for training and a latex or thin rubber, which is lighter, for competitions.
  • Check the size of the valve: valves are usually thin and narrow (presta) for medium end to high end bikes and larger for entry level bikes, usually MTBs.

Inner tubes' maintenance and repair

There are anti-puncture preventive fluids or anti-puncture bands to protect the bike inner tubes.

If, despite these precautions, the tyre is punctured, several solutions exist to repair it:

  • Anti-puncture bomb for clogging
  • Patches to stick on the hole

MTB inner tube MTB, specific inner tubes for MTB tyres:

As for MTB tyres, the inner tubes are adapted to this discipline. They are more resistant than the road bike inner tubes or the city bike inner tubes. Indeed, in mountain biking, punctures are more common and the choice of a good inner tube will avoid a good number of punctures. The MTB inner tubes are really thought for this discipline. They allow you to find the right pressure with a greater room for manoeuvre than the road bike in order to have the best grip ratio. When the terrain is greasy, the MTB inner tubes tolerate a very low pressure for example.
Weight must also be taken into account, which is a not insignificant factor in XC. It's also important to find the right weight/resistance ratio.

How to have the right MTB inner tubes:

The choice of your inner tube is made according to several criteria. If you're a regular practitioner in XC competition, you'll have to opt for light rooms, whereas if you practice more extreme disciplines like DH, more resistant chambers will be recommended to avoid "pinching".
The section of your MTB tyre is also to be taken into account to choose the inner tube. Indeed the section must be adapted to the size of the tyre. For example if you have a tyre of 2.1, it will be necessary to put inner tubes in section from 1.90 to 2.20.
You'll find on Alltricks.com the inner tubes adapted to your MTB practice among the best brands: Continental, Michelin, Hutchinson...
