MTB tyres, designed for the roughest terrains

MTB tyres are designed to deliver grip on off-road conditions. The aggressive tread patterns and width is very different compared to a Road tyre, City tyre or BMX tyre. MTB riders are looking for different MTB tyres depending their needs: grip, comfort, speed, weight, durability and puncture protection which is very important to avoid many punctures on rough trails.
It is very important to choose a MTB tyre carefully because they are the only parts in direct contact with the ground. A MTB tyre must allow you to ride on any surface: grass, dirt, mud, gravels...

Which MTB tyre is right for me?

There are several factors to take in consideration when you are choosing your MTB tyres. Indeed, MTB tyres are designed for different riding disciplines and conditions. To make the good choice, first of all you need to take in consideration the conditions you ride in (rough trails, dry trails, muddy trails). Once you know the conditions, you can choose which tread patterns, carcass, and compound (hard or soft) to use.
Then you need to take in consideration the tyre sizing. MTB tyres width range from 1.0 to 4.25 if you have a FatBike! Narrow tyres aim XC racer, wide tyres are designed for Downhill (DH), Enduro and Freeride.
Finally, you need to choose between tubeless tyres or TubeType tyres with an inner tube. Tubeless tyres will have increased resistance to pinch flats and the possibility to be ran at lower pressures.

You will find on Alltricks.com the perfect MTB tyres for you within the best brands available: Schwalbe, Continental, Michelin, Maxxis, Schwalbe...

MTB Tyres - Q&A

¿How to choose your MTB tyres?

Depending on weather and terrain conditions, different types of front and rear mtb tyres are required:
  • If the road is dry and rolling, it is advisable to choose MTB tyres with high knob density but not very pronounced.
  • If the road is rocky and/or wet, you can equip yourself with medium density tyres with more pronounced knobs on the outer edges of the tyre.
  • If the ground is muddy, it is necessary to wear a tyre with few but very pronounced knobs.

For a 27 x 1.95" tyre: 1.95" corresponds to the width of your tyre and 27" corresponds to the diameter in inches of your wheel. The width of the tyres may vary from brand to brand, as there is no standardisation at this level. The most common sizes are between 1.40 and 2.60. With these tyres, all uses are possible.

To make the right choice, you need to look at the following elements:

  • Wheel sizes (in inches): 26", 27.5", 27.5"+, 29" and 29"+
  • Type of mounting of your wheel: Tube type,Tubeless and Tubeless Ready
  • Maximum rim width allowed by the fork (front wheel) or frame (rear wheel)
  • The tyre bead: flexible or rigid

¿Which MTB tyre width to choose?

The 1.8 to 2.1 inch wide tyres are more reactive and allow for fast rolling.
The 2.2 to 2.5 inch wide covers are the most versatile and offer the best protection.
Tyres over 2.5 inches wide allow you to ride on the most difficult and technical terrain.
The sections of your tyres at the front and rear can differ, depending on practice and type of terrain. This way you will find better grip. In this case, we always opt for a larger tyre at the front than at the rear.

¿What are tubeless tyres?

The various types of tyres are:
  • Tubetype: air chamber mounting.
  • TL ready or Tubeless Ready: Tubeless mounting (without inner tube) with prevention.
  • Tubeless: Tubeless mounting (without inner tube).

The tyre and rim form a watertight unit thanks to their specific tyre triangles. Thus, the edges "hook" into the sides of the rim. The rim must be completely watertight. Some are specifically designed for tubeless. Others can be converted to tubeless by means of a specific mounting.
Tubeless allows you to ride at lower pressures and limits the risk of punctures. Tubeless Ready tyres have been developed to reduce weight, while maintaining the tubeless rims so that the tyre can be clipped onto the rim. Tubeless Ready tyres require the use of a preventive fluid to waterproof the tyre casing. It resembles a Tubetype casing (inner tube).

¿ When to change MTB tyres?

Changing a worn MTB tyre is essential for safety. When your tyre loses grip, it's time to replace it. For an MTB tyre, wear is characterised by smoothed and compacted centre lugs.
