Trail tights are a hugely popular technical garment for what they do anatomically. Wrapping the thighs firmly, they play a major muscle support role. Compressive and semi-compressive models apply a calculated pressure that absorbs much of the shock and vibration each stride generates, above all on punishing descents. Cutting those muscular micro-lesions delays the onset of fatigue, reduces post-effort soreness and supports good venous return. The runner gains endurance and comfort across distances from marathon to ultra-trail.
One of the most sought-after benefits of tights is how completely they remove friction between the thighs, a scourge for plenty of runners. Working as a genuine second skin, the fabric stays exactly in place and follows the movement without ever bunching. Stretchy, smooth, soft materials prevent the skin irritation that sweat and moisture would otherwise make worse. Flatlock seams, or no seams at all on the inner leg, make for an untroubled run and let the trail runner focus purely on the effort and the terrain.
Close-fitting as it is, technical tights handle moisture very well. The synthetic fibres pick up sweat and move it straight outward for ultra-fast drying. In summer they shield you from UV while keeping the muscles cool, thanks to lighter-knit zones behind the knees and at the groin. On cooler days the denser fabric holds body heat at a level that suits performance, which shows how far this garment stretches across a wide temperature range.
Modern tights often build proper carry belts of stretch mesh into the waist, or large side pockets set against the thighs. That storage capacity spreads the weight of mandatory kit close to the runner's centre of gravity and stops it bouncing. A soft flask, a phone, nutrition bars and a survival blanket all slip in easily. Silicone bands on the upper thigh are sometimes added to give the hands a non-slip point of purchase when you're power hiking a climb.
