Trekking poles are very useful when hiking. They reduce impact and the load on the joints, improve balance and help in overcoming obstacles. For optimal use, the length of the poles should be adjusted so that the arms form a 90° angle. This will give you a more comfortable posture that you will feel in the long run.
How to choose your hiking poles?
When buying your hiking pole, there are several things to consider. Firstly, you need to know what you will be doing with them? Do you need poles for hiking or for trail running? Once you have decided, you can choose between a folding spole with several strands or a telescopic spole. Finally you have to choose the material of your pole (aluminium or carbon).
Trekking poles for winter (snowshoeing/nordic skiing poles)?
A hiking pole can obviously be used in the summer for walking, but it can also be used during winter for Nordic skiing or snowshoeing. For winter use, you will need to choose models with larger diameter washers to avoid sinking into the snow. On some models, such as the Black Diamond Distance Carbon FLZ, it is possible to adjust your washers to suit the season.
Telescopic hiking poles ?
When buying poles you may be hesitating between folding poles and telescopic poles. Folding poles are generally lighter and more compact than telescopic poles. However, they do not adjust in length, so they are suitable for flat terrain but less so in the mountains where we recommend telescopic poles.
