The gravel handlebar is the component that allows you to steer your bike, to brake and to shift gears. It is formed by the handlebars and the stem. It is very similar to road handlebars but has some features specific to gravel riding.
In general, gravel handlebars have a flared shape to optimise rider comfort. It will allow a better control of the bike on the most technical terrains and especially downhill. There are two types of material for gravel handlebars: Aluminium and carbon. The advantage of carbon is that it is generally lighter than aluminium. The choice of material will depend on your budget and your needs.
It is the gravel handlebars that will allow you a good position and an optimal comfort on your bike, hence the importance of choosing the right handlebars. The handlebars must be solid because they will be regularly subjected to torsion, whether it be during sprints or simply while standing up.
Several features similar to the road handlebars are recognizable on the gravel handlebars: the drop, the reach and the back sweep. The main difference is in the flare which provides a more stable and comfortable cockpit.
If you ride mainly on the road, you can opt for a road handlebar: it will allow you to keep your aerodynamics.
