Gravel wheels don't really have any special features as they are wheels made to go on any kind of terrain from road to rough and technical tracks. In addition to this, the tyre section is wider than on road bikes. Generally, gravel wheels accept tyres up to 50mm which improves the grip. The other important point of the Gravel wheels is that today they offer (almost) all the switch into tubeless to reduce the risk of punctures and above all to improve comfort throughout the trip.
Gravel wheels are also (for most products) adaptable to disc brakes and are to be preferred: they allow efficient braking when the terrain is slippery, muddy etc. This is a feature that contributes to the fact that the Gravel can be used on all types of terrain.
Today there are two types of gravel wheels: carbon and aluminium. Carbon wheels are very light, dynamic and rigid but cost a certain amount of money whereas aluminium wheels are cheaper but heavier and less dynamic. The choice of material will depend on your budget and your expectations!
For rough terrains, it is best to use 650b wheels compatible with tyres up to 50mm wide. This will give you better performance and shock absorption for this type of ground. However, for more rolling terrain it is better to use 700c gravel wheels: these are wheels that are similar to the road models and therefore perform better in terms of speed.
