The origins of the Suunto Race: a new turning point for the brand

The Suunto Race represents a turning point in the brand's history, combining for the first time the modern aesthetics of AMOLED with the demands of sports enthusiasts for precision and reliability. Suunto, renowned for its ruggedness and outdoor functionality, wanted to create a model that would capture the attention of sports enthusiasts while meeting the expectations of everyday use. The Suunto Race takes the best of the previous models and adds state-of-the-art sensors and improved battery life, reinforcing the brand's commitment to the most demanding users. The objective was clear: to offer a watch that meets a variety of needs, whether for extreme adventures or everyday monitoring.

Excellence by Suunto

Faced with competitors such as Garmin and Coros, Suunto has opted for innovation while remaining true to its reputation for reliability. With features such as multi-band GPS and an advanced power-saving mode, Suunto is targeting users who consider autonomy and performance to be essential criteria. By integrating sophisticated navigation technologies and an optimised user interface, Suunto aims not only to compete with the market leaders, but also to reinforce its position as the benchmark for high-quality sports equipment.

What is a multiband GPS?

Multiband GPS allows the watch to communicate with satellites in several frequency bands, such as the E1, E5a and E5b bands of the Galileo system (the European GPS system). By reducing interference and minimising signal errors, this type of GPS improves accuracy. For example, if a satellite sends a signal indicating a distance of 23,222 km on one frequency and 23,222.2 km on another, multi-band GPS will favour the shorter distance, considering that the longer distance is probably being deflected by obstacles or disturbances between you and the satellite. This type of correction is particularly valuable in complex environments, such as dense urban areas or forests.

On average, a multiband GPS offers an accuracy of around two metres, which is considerably more precise than a standard GPS. This accuracy becomes essential for outdoor activities where every metre counts, such as trail running in the mountains or hiking in places where the GPS signal can be disrupted.
