The Hoka Mafate 5 refines the recipe that made the series a success: a shoe capable of crossing the most hostile terrain with the comfort of a road shoe. Updates focus on the durability of the mesh and the responsiveness of the upper foam, for a more connected and durable running experience.
The magic of the Mafate lies in its dual-density midsole. The upper layer, lighter and more responsive, provides bounce at push-off, while the lower rubberized EVA layer ensures durability and protection.
In this version 5, the upper foam has been reworked to be even more responsive, allowing for effective relaunches even after several hours of running.
The new single-layer Jacquard mesh offers precise foot support without constraint. More breathable, it evacuates water better after stream crossings.
The heel collar has been redesigned to relieve the Achilles tendon while perfectly locking the ankle on technical slopes.
For grip, the Mafate 5 relies on the leader Vibram®. Litebase technology reduces the weight of the outsole without sacrificing performance.
The 5 mm lugs with Traction Lug technology (micro-textures on the lug) provide a biting grip in mud and on wet rock, surpassing classic outsoles.
The Mafate 5 generally fits true to size for a Hoka trail shoe. The forefoot volume is slightly more generous than on a Speedgoat, offering more comfort for the toes over time.
Our advice: Take your usual running size (often one size up from your street shoe). Allow for a margin of about 1 cm at the toe for descents.
Wide feet: The mesh is accommodating, but if you have very wide feet, trying them on is recommended, although the platform is naturally wide.
The Mafate 5 is more technical and a bit more "aggressive". It has a dual-density sole (more responsive) and a more robust structure for very difficult terrain. The Speedgoat 6 is lighter, more flexible, and often more versatile for less technical trails.
No, thanks to the curved profile of the sole (Meta-Rocker), the transition is very smooth. However, if you are coming from a high drop (10mm), go gradually to get your Achilles tendons used to it.
The standard model presented here is not waterproof, which favors breathability and rapid water drainage. For waterproofing, check if a GTX (Gore-Tex) version is available.
The Mafate is renowned for its durability. With its Vibram sole and dense foam, it can generally reach 700 to 900 km depending on your terrain.
Strictly for connections (a few kilometers to reach a trail). The cushioning is sufficient, but the asphalt will "grind down" the soft lugs designed for dirt prematurely.
Yes, the base of the shoe is very wide ("footprint"), which provides excellent ground contact. The foot is seated "in" the sole (bucket) and not just on top of it, which secures the ankle.
These are small micro-structures added to the walls of the main lugs. Hoka claims that this increases the contact surface and improves traction by up to 20% on loose terrain.
