Test Saucony Endorphin Elite 3: The shoe made for records?

20 juillet 2026 / Redac , Author

In the ultra-competitive world of road running, the race for carbon technology never stops. Saucony, already well established with its Pro range, pushes the limits to the max with the Saucony Endorphin Elite 3. Designed for pure efficiency and running economy, this "Super Shoe" promises to smash personal bests, from 10K to marathon. To verify if the promises of the American brand hold true on the pavement, this exceptional model was put to the test in the specific context of a half-marathon preparation.

Test of the Saucony Endorphin Elite 3

Design and first impressions: A stunning look and a striking build

As soon as I opened the box, I was immediately seduced by the brand's work. The design is very nice with beautiful finishes. Usually, I'm not always comfortable with too many color mixes on my running shoes, but in this case, I must admit it's very successful. The aggressive and modern colorway perfectly highlights the racing DNA of the model. I really like its appearance; it’s a shoe with a resolutely sleek profile. Also, you quickly notice that the platform looks a bit wider than on previous versions, probably to gain stability, and the overall integration of the sole gives a very aerodynamic look.

When holding it, what immediately strikes you is its featherweight. It's almost unsettling for a build that seems so bulky. The mesh is super thin, totally oriented towards performance and lightness. And then, you instantly see the huge sole with very thick foam, approaching the 40mm limit at the heel. Surprisingly, turning the shoe over, I also noticed there is quite a bit of foam directly exposed under the sole, which immediately caught my attention regarding Saucony’s technical choices.

Even before taking a single stride, you clearly feel that this shoe lives up to the brand's promise. Saucony positions it as their super shoe to smash marathon times, and given the highly aggressive profile with the visible carbon plate, you feel it’s a shoe tailor-made to chase your best time. I’m really expecting a strong energy return to help me towards the end of long runs or during an official race, while sparing my muscles. I especially expect it to help me on the combo of running economy and dynamism, thanks to this famous IncrediRun foam coupled with the carbon plate.

Despite this enthusiasm, I had some doubts before trying it under real conditions. I was a bit worried about the stability of my ankles in the turns, because running with such a high sole often requires a certain adaptation of the stride. I'd also heard whispers in the pack that it could "squeak" a little at first, a small sound detail often present with new foams. Finally, this super plush cushioning made me particularly curious: I sincerely hoped it wouldn’t be too "soft" underfoot at the push-off phase.

Handling and Comfort: The Sensation of Weightlessness

When it’s time to put them on, the sensations are exceptional. It’s completely crazy, you feel like you’re walking on a trampoline or almost weightless in your living room. From the moment you put them on, the shoe is super comfortable. The stretchy fabric around the lacing adapts immediately to the foot without creating any annoying pressure points. You feel free but perfectly supported.

The lacing system and adjustment are particularly well thought out. The tongue wraps a bit like a sock around the instep and prevents any unpleasant rubbing that could turn into a blister over long distances. There’s a small detail that I especially love about this model: the integrated loop to secure the laces so they don’t move at all during effort. It’s clever and very practical to stay focused on your run. As for foot support, the locking at the heel and midfoot does a great job. You feel secure inside the shoe.

Regarding the fit, I find the width perfectly normal. And yet, I have rather wide feet. The shoe’s mesh is flexible and forgiving. It fit me very well. I was a little afraid of being too tight in an ultra-profiled racing model, but it’s quite tolerant, even if you have a somewhat high instep like mine. I didn’t feel the need to radically change size. I might advise taking a half size up if you really have very wide feet in the front, which is actually what I did to be perfectly comfortable. But otherwise, for a classic foot shape, the shoe fits completely normally compared to market standards.

Real-world Testing: The Realm of Speed

I then put this model to the test over a medium duration, through 6 sessions for about 60 km total. Given its characteristics, it’s no surprise: this is a pure road runner. I only ran on asphalt and on an athletics track. On pavement, it’s royal. The behavior is exemplary. Of course, you must avoid rough trails, paths, or forest sections; it’s not made for that at all and could quickly become unstable.

The test took place during my half-marathon prep, with very specific types of training: long intervals and pace runs at 10km or half-marathon pace. It’s at these paces that you can really analyze its behavior, and you clearly feel differences according to the effort intensity! On a slow warm-up jog, you just enjoy the plush comfort of the gigantic sole. It’s not necessarily very pleasant, at least for me, to run at low speed with this type of geometry that pushes you forward. But as soon as you step up the pace, the SPEEDROLL technology’s tipping effect and the carbon plate activate spectacularly. The harder you push, the more it gives back. It’s thrilling.

I ran exclusively on dry roads since the test took place over June and July. In these conditions, the grip is very good. Traction is sure with every foot strike. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to test it on wet roads, but on dry surfaces, it’s flawless. Moreover, my initial worries about noise quickly disappeared: the famous little foam noise during compression completely vanished after a few kilometers of breaking in. Beyond that, the comfort remains completely intact, even after more than an hour of sustained running.

Performance Evaluation: An Exceptional Cushioning/Dynamism Ratio

It’s in the pure performance chapter that the Endorphin Elite 3 reveals its full potential. Protection for the foot while running feels excellent. With the impressive thickness of foam underfoot, the harshness of the road is totally erased. You truly feel well protected from impacts on every landing. There is reinforcement on the front of the shoe that seems more than sufficient given the shoe’s purpose, which remains pure road racing.

Stability logically requires a bit more focus. It remains a very tall and very flexible shoe due to its foam. On long straightaways, it’s simply fantastic, the foot rolls naturally and you rack up the kilometers. But in tight hairpin turns, you need to be a little careful with foot placement to avoid twisting your ankle. It will clearly not suit someone with strong pronation, for example. The same goes for overall support: for a shoe of this profile, it performs well thanks to a slightly widened platform, but its primary purpose is not to offer corrective support. I didn’t feel unsafe, but I avoid forcing it laterally or on sharp changes of direction. Its thing is to run fast straight ahead. As for grip, the carbon rubber sticks very well, but note that it doesn’t cover the entire sole, which is why I am cautious in tight corners.

The foot roll is of a masterful fluidity. It’s an absolute delight. The famous split carbon plate developed by Saucony really optimally supports the movement. The transition between foot strike and push-off is much smoother and less abrupt than on other very demanding carbon models.

The cushioning is remarkable. It’s incredibly soft without feeling bogged down or like the shoe absorbs your energy. The comfort/firmness ratio at the push-off is top notch. Honestly, for me, this is one of the shoe’s major strengths. And this ratio perfectly serves the dynamism and responsiveness of the whole. It’s the perfect mix of both worlds. You get this very fun feeling of truly being propelled with every stride, without the shoe becoming an inflexible plank.

Finally, overall breathability of the upper is excellent. I have nothing to complain about on this point, the RacingFit mesh circulates air very well around the foot. It’s perfect when your feet, like your heart rate, start heating up during very intense summer sessions.

Durability: The Flip Side of High Performance

To conclude on a somewhat more pragmatic note, the durability of this type of ultra-performance shoe remains the crux of the matter. The upper seems robust despite being very thin. It’s mainly the sole that appears to wear visually quite quickly. I say "appears" because after 60 km the sole is not worn in the strict sense, but it does seem premature for so few kilometers. As I noticed at the beginning of my test, the foam exposed under the shoe gets quite scuffed on aggressive asphalt. Luckily, this doesn’t change the performance or the foam’s impressive rebound at all, but it serves as a reminder that this is still an exceptional pair. It’s a model to save carefully for race days or very fast and decisive training sessions in your preparation. It’s clearly a weapon of choice to break your records on asphalt.

Summary: Advantages and Disadvantages

AdvantagesDisadvantages
