Test of the Brooks Cascadia 20: The shoe designed for demanding trails?

21 juillet 2026 / Redac , Author

In the very demanding world of trail running, the quest for reliable long-distance gear never takes a break. Brooks, a brand historically rooted on the trails with its famous line, celebrates a major milestone with the twentieth iteration of its flagship model: the Brooks Cascadia 20. Designed for durability, stability, and protection on the most technical terrains, this iconic shoe promises to support trail runners for long hours without ever sacrificing comfort. To check if the promises of the American brand hold up against the harshness of the mountain, this model was put to the test by Eric, from the Alltricks staff, during the Pierra Menta trail which involves very steep elevation gains.

Design and first impressions: A worked aesthetic that inspires solidity

From the moment you open the box, I took the time to carefully observe the lines and silhouette of this new edition. For a shoe meant to tread on earth and mud, the visual aspect is often secondary, but here, the first contact is very positive. The shoe is visually pleasant, the design is genuinely successful. The studs and sole look solid. Brooks clearly managed to modernize this historic model while keeping its adventurous DNA, offering a design that is quite functional and rather attractive; for a shoe of this type, the light tone on the upper part is visually nice even though it gets dirty quite quickly.

Even before putting them on for my first run, my expectations were particularly high. When you commit to mountain trails, the gear must leave no room for doubt. Mainly, I especially expect good durability in the long term, to avoid as much as possible any discomfort in the foot and gait after 3/4 hours of running while staying solid on the most technical terrain. In view of the reassuring message from the brand, which positions this model as a reference in ultra and comfort, the first tactile and visual cues are more than encouraging. The shoes are indeed very solid and the sole absorbs shocks and technicality of the terrain very effectively. The shoe also provides a good dynamism that is very appreciable when climbing. This bodes excellent sensations for the long adventures to come.

Getting started: A firm fit that quickly adapts to your foot shape

Trying them on is the decisive step that usually confirms or contradicts the first impressions. Sliding my foot inside, the initial feeling was extremely clear and direct. From the first few seconds, I noticed a shoe quite tight at the beginning, with pressure points around the top of the foot. This initial firmness could have been a cause for concern for the hours of running ahead, but fortunately, the upper adapted naturally. I felt a bit tight in it at the first try, but after a few strides the fabric relaxed.

This ability of the upper to take the shape of the foot immediately reassured me and prevented me from questioning a possible size change. No, I quickly felt comfortable in this shoe but I had already tried Cascadias before. Once the foot was well in place, I tested the overall locking provided by the lacing system. Support is a crucial point in trail running, and here the result is perfectly reassuring for what’s next: good overall foot support, you have to adjust the laces well but the shoe fulfills its role very well on steep and difficult terrain.

Real conditions test: 80 kilometers of challenge on alpine ridges

To be absolutely sure of the behavior and reliability of this model, an uncompromising testing environment was necessary. So I chose an exclusive and long training format (15 hours over three outings). I wanted to test the material, the structure, and my own comfort on long runs between 3 and 5 hours with strong elevation gain and steep percentages. It is precisely on this kind of demanding route, which forgives no weakness, that you perceive the limits of a pair of trail shoes, especially since the total elevation gain for this training block reached 7000 m D+.

During these long runs, the skies were kind, and I enjoyed dry and sunny weather. The surfaces encountered were however technically challenging, allowing me to explore the full versatility of the model. I had the opportunity to move over dry rocks, alpine paths, mountain meadows and pastures, forest trails, plenty of varied terrain you find on a mountain outing. At the end of this vertical journey, the conclusion is excellent: a total of 80 km tested. I felt no degradation in the shoe’s grip over the kilometers. No need either to readjust the laces once the right tightness was found.

Performance evaluation: Flawless grip and a shield against the elements

Once truly launched on these rugged routes, I was quickly able to gauge the level of protection offered by the rock plate and reinforcements. I never feared obstacles, as I benefited from good protection in a difficult to very difficult environment. Regarding joint stability, essential on slopes, the finding is reassuring: very good overall ankle support on tricky terrain. Some forward/backward foot movement inside the shoe on very steep descents (>30%). This slight slipping on extreme slopes is a parameter to keep in mind, especially since I have a wide foot and the shoe quickly adapted. A few impacts of the forefoot with the shoe tip on the steepest descents.

Nevertheless, if there is a major strength to retain about this edition, it is unquestionably its phenomenal traction. There were no grip issues on dry terrain; this is the shoe’s greatest strength. We’ll see on wetter terrain. The outsole offers an overall behavior that immediately inspires confidence to the runner: very stable shoes when laced properly. I made many difficult foot placements, I had neither pain nor scares.

On the dynamic and biomechanical side, the midsole does an excellent filtration job. The generous cushioning guarantees very good foot protection, no muscle pain in the foot after outings. Moreover, efficiency during push-offs is well present: despite a structure for complex terrain, the shoe returns well especially uphill. A bit heavy on paved sections but like all trail shoes. Speaking of rolling transition sections, the shoe rolls well on parts where running is required. It remains a bit heavy on the flattest sections but stays very comfortable.

As for managing temperature, water, and humidity during effort, the overall feeling is very fair, although it is hard to rate—I slightly wet the shoe but with heat I very quickly evacuated all the water. To be seen in less hot situations.

Durability: A robustness built to rack up the kilometers

After putting this pair through a real shock treatment on rocky and abrasive trails, it was essential to inspect the wear of the materials closely. The final assessment fully confirms the design intent of this model to last over time. After several long runs with the shoes, a slight wear mark on the side of the lining. No visible wear on the cleats or the sole, which is the main point. This is excellent news for all endurance enthusiasts looking for a highly reliable road companion, capable of handling the most aggressive mountain trails without showing premature signs of fatigue.
