Testing the Asics Trabuco Max 5: XXL comfort for ultra-distance running?

27 janvier 2026

This is one of the most anticipated releases for long-distance enthusiasts and those seeking absolute comfort. Asics' "Max" series returns with its fifth iteration: the Trabuco Max 5. Promising a cloud-like feel underfoot and effortless mileage, this shoe stands out with its imposing build. But how does it perform once taken onto technical or muddy trails?

To find out, we handed this new model to Julie from Alltricks, an experienced marathon runner, to put it through its paces on varied terrain—from smooth forest paths to slippery slopes. Verdict after 50 kilometers of testing.

Asics Trabuco Max 5

The real first impression often comes when you take the shoe out of the box—and the Trabuco Max 5 doesn’t leave anyone indifferent. The first thing I appreciated was its aesthetic design. It’s a very stylish shoe; I loved the color scheme. The blend of colors is excellent, and it makes you want to wear it right away.

When I held it, one detail immediately stood out: the contrast between its bulky appearance and its actual weight. For a shoe with such a thick sole, it felt surprisingly light.

In terms of finishing, the shoe seems well-balanced. It features a lacing system with small loops, which might seem a bit delicate but adds a touch of originality—and I had no issues with it during testing. Another thoughtful ergonomic detail caught my attention: the elastic lace attachment on the tongue, which is genuinely practical.

Asics promises a comfortable, slightly roomy shoe designed for long distances. At first glance, the shoe delivers on the brand’s promise.

50 km test: from mud to rolling trails

To put Asics' promise to the test, I covered around 50 kilometers across various outings and terrains. My runs ranged from 5 to 22 km, allowing me to assess the shoe on both short jogs and longer sessions.

I intentionally chose a diverse "playground": asphalt, trails, and rugged paths. The weather conditions also helped me push the shoe's grip to its limits, alternating between dry and muddy terrain. So, I faced a full range of scenarios with the Trabuco Max 5.

Test conditions

To assess the true capabilities of this Trabuco Max 5, it wasn't enough to just look at it. The test protocol covered a total distance of approximately 50 kilometres, spread over various rides and terrains.

  • The terrain: The test covered a wide range of surfaces, from asphalt (unavoidable for road sections) to forest trails, including rough and stony paths.
  • Weather conditions: The shoe was tested in dry and muddy conditions, ideal for testing the versatility of the rubber.
  • Type of sessions: The programme included short runs (5 km) and longer runs (22 km), mainly jogging and endurance training, with "a few sprints to test the dynamism".

I was expecting it to be comfortable and also grippy. It will definitely be able to accompany me on rolling and muddy trail runs.

Test of the Asics Trabuco Max 5

FFBlast+ foam that is effective on climbs but designed for comfort above all else

It’s time to see what this Trabuco Max 5 is truly capable of. I was particularly interested in its comfort and grip.

For my trail running, the cushioning is perfect. It’s a bit firm, but that’s what I personally like. The slightly more dynamic forefoot makes it feel very balanced.

The FF Blast+ foam technology works wonders as soon as the slope increases. It’s great on uphills—the foam provides excellent rebound, making the shoe feel lighter and more dynamic than on flat ground. I find the bounce in the forefoot quite enjoyable during climbs.

However, let’s not kid ourselves—this isn’t a sprinting shoe. When it comes to speed, it’s a bit too heavy to offer significant energy return. It remains pleasant but I wouldn’t say it propels your stride. It’s very comfort-focused. On paved sections, it feels a bit stiff, but that’s the case with about 80% of trail shoes.

In summary, for steady-paced running, it does its job well. It’s very comfortable, allowing you to log kilometers without any loss of comfort. The comfort remained consistent on trails and felt firmer on roads.

Impeccable grip that compensates for a lack of road holding

This was the other big question. With such a thick sole, stability is often the Achilles’ heel of maximalist models.

Let’s start with grip, which is excellent. It’s perfect on forest trails. The lugs are very effective—they hold up well even on slippery and uneven sections. Additionally, the rock plate seems to do its job well; I didn’t experience any discomfort in that regard.

When it comes to stability, the assessment is more mixed. Surprisingly, for a shoe with a wide forefoot, I didn’t feel any issues with stride fluidity—it feels quite natural. I didn’t notice any instability when cornering.

However, the shoe is wide and thick. The direct consequence is that you feel less of what’s happening underfoot. This is a slight downside: you can feel a bit unbalanced because the sole adapts less to irregularities. If you like to have some feedback from the ground, you won’t get that sensation here. On rocky terrain, be cautious—you’re elevated on the forefoot, which reduces precision.

Reassuring robustness for clocking up the miles

After this test, the shoe shows no signs of weakness. I imagine this shoe will hold up well over time. It seems sturdy and durable to me. I can imagine covering long distances in it without it losing any of its quality.

For which type of runner?

This model is primarily designed for runners looking for comfort.

  • Foot shape: Suitable for normal to wide feet. Please note that as it is a little wide for my feet, I don't think it would be suitable for someone with narrow feet.
  • Use: Ideal for long runs or nature jogs where you want to feel protected.

Verdict: The ideal companion for long journeys (if you don't have a delicate foot).

The Asics Trabuco Max 5 hits the mark. It's a shoe that embraces its size: it's built to last and protect.

It's ideal for those looking for a shoe that can reliably accompany them on rolling and muddy trail runs. Its unfailing grip and comfortable fit make it a valuable ally.
