Want to start ultra-trail running? Participate in the Festival des Templiers? Or simply train in winter? A trail headlamp is then essential in your gear!
Gone are the old bulky, heavy headlamps with poor lighting. The new generation headlamp is less bulky, more practical, more powerful, and more autonomous than their torch lamp cousins. They are very popular especially with LED technology.
However, you need to pay particular attention to your choice, because the features can differ depending on your use and needs. Indeed if you want to read the latest guidebook to plan the next summit before sleeping, run in Montmartre, or finish the Grand Raid des Pyrénées (GRP) and arrive proud and happy at Vielle-Aure, the power, autonomy, etc. of the trail headlamp should not be the same.
So we will light your way with our detailed comparison of headlamps for trail, running, and outdoor activities.

Petzl Tikkina 300, the best cheap trail running headlamp
| Type of lamp | Wide beam |
| Lighting power | 300 lumens |
| Autonomy | N/A |
| Charging time | Battery replacement |
| Power supply | 3 AAA/LR03 batteries included |
| Water resistance | IPX4 |
| Weight | 92 grams |
| Options | - Compatible with Helmet Adapt and Bike Adapt 2 mounts - Compatible with a Core rechargeable battery |
We start this comparison with the headlamp Petzl TIKKINA 300. It is the basic model we recommend to you. I admit you won’t be racing the Templiers with this headlamp. But it is the ideal headlamp for tight budgets. Count on about 25 euros. With 300 lumens, the TIKKINA is just sufficient for moving around or running at a slow pace on non-technical trails (parks, flat paths). However, its wide beam will still allow you to see well around you. Keep in mind though that for fast, technical trail running or mountain use, 300 lumens is insufficient. The lack of range and focused beam limits its performance in more demanding conditions.
Black Diamond Spot 400, an economical alternative to the Petzl Tikkina
| Type of lamp | N/A |
| Lighting power | 400 lumens (visible up to 100 meters) |
| Autonomy | N/A |
| Charging time | Battery replacement |
| Power supply | AAA battery or BD1500 battery |
| Water resistance | IPX8 |
| Weight | 77.5 grams |
| Options | - Built-in battery status indicator - Intensity memory (allows choosing the intensity setting without returning to the default setting) |
The Black Diamond Spot 400 is an excellent, slightly more powerful alternative to the Petzl Tikkina. Thus, with a maximum power of 400 lumens, it will illuminate a bit better than its competitor. It also integrates PowerTap™ technology, allowing you to instantly switch from one light intensity to another. A battery status indicator also makes it easy to monitor autonomy.
For power supply, as with Petzl, you have two options: a rechargeable BD 1500 lithium-ion battery (included with the 400-R version) or alkaline batteries (included). Thanks to an IPX8 water resistance, this lamp can be submerged underwater up to 1.10 meters for 30 minutes, ensuring great reliability in wet conditions.
Lightweight, it weighs between 72 g and 77.5 g depending on the chosen power source. The Spot 400 is ideal for athletes looking for an economical, efficient, and versatile product. Its compact design reflects Black Diamond’s expertise, combining functionality and durability.
Silva Seek 450 Recharge, the best budget rechargeable headlamp
| Type of lamp | Rechargeable LED headlamp |
| Lighting power | Up to 450 lumens |
| Autonomy | 3h at 450 lumens mode, 6h at 200 lumens mode, 90h at 10 lumens mode for reduced vision up to 15 meters |
| Charging time | Time not disclosed by the brand |
| Power supply | 1,350 mAh Li-ion rechargeable battery (USB-C) |
| Water resistance | IPX5 (immersion up to 1 m for 30 min) |
| Weight | 70 g |
| Options | - Adjustable lamp angle |
Here we move on to a brand less known than Petzl or Black Diamond but this Silva Seek offers an excellent value for money and above all a big advantage: with it no more need for batteries. This is common in higher-end headlamps but not usual for a headlamp sold around 45 €. The battery is generally sold as an option with other brands. So, you will never run out of battery by recharging it like your smartphone.
With 450 lumens, the Seek 450 offers a higher power than basic battery models. Its featherweight of only 70 grams (battery included) makes it very comfortable to wear, even during repeated movements like running. Crucial for runners, it integrates Silva Intelligent Light technology that combines a focused beam for range (up to 90 meters in Max mode) and a wide lighting for close vision. This distribution is much more effective than the simple wide beam of very basic models. It features three brightness levels, including an ultra-low 10 lumen mode to maximize autonomy (up to 90 hours).
The 450 lumens of the Seek 450 make it sufficient for moderate trail outings or low-pace runs on non-technical trails. It allows better anticipation of obstacles than a 300 lumen model. It is also perfect as a versatile lamp for camping, hiking, or household use. However, for slightly more technical or fast runs, you might need an even more powerful model.

You want to see like it’s broad daylight, even in the middle of the night? With its 3,000 lumens under the hood and its big long-range battery, the Silva Free 3000 L is here to pack a punch, whether you’re deep into ultra-trail, skiing, or ski mountaineering.
The big extra thing? It’s the very first modular headlamp in the world. A real little Lego set for demanding athletes! No more hassle with dangling wires that catch on branches: with its "Free Technology," all cables are hidden inside the headband. It’s clean, neat, and avoids nasty surprises during your run. Bonus: it handles heat really well thanks to its airflow cooling system (because at 3,000 lumens, yeah, it gets a bit hot up there!).
On the lighting side, it’s a masterpiece for high-intensity activities. The Silva Intelligent Light takes care of everything: it lights way ahead while keeping a wide beam at your feet to avoid tripping over the first root you come across. Even better, the Silva Flow Light senses your pace and adjusts the light all by itself. No need to fumble with buttons mid-effort! Add to that good water resistance (IPX5), a 5-level battery gauge to avoid running dry, and a little red light at the back to stay visible to your fellow warriors. In short, a true multisport war machine.
